Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Flordia in 1964. Famous for their song “Sweet Home Alabama,” they came to prominence in the Southern United States through the 1970s, and rose to world wide recognition before three original members of the band died in a plane crash in 1977. After years in hiatus, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited in 1987 for a full scale tour with five major members of the pre-crash band: Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Loen Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle. Unfortunately, since then the band has seen many various member changes. The reconstituted Lynyrd Skynyrd consists of core members Gary Rossington, Johhny Van Zant (brother to the late Ronnie Van Zant), Rickey Medlocke and Michael Cartellone.

Their newest album, “God and Guns,” lives up to the Lynyrd Skynyrd legacy begun nearly thirty five years ago. With all the lineup changes and passed members, some fans “expected [the band] to say enough is enough.” But with more than sixty albums and sales beyond thirty million dollars, the remaining band members of Lynyrd Skynyrd simply cannot give up on their passion for rock and their passion for fans. As cultural icons, they hope to add to their canon of work with their newest album and latest tour.

“We wanted to show the people that not only are we doing the old material, keeping the music going, but we still have some new tricks up our sleeves, too,” says founding guitarist Gary Rossington. After losing to so many band mates and friends, returning to the studio was no easy feat. “But we got through it,” says Van Zant, “as Lynyrd Skynyrd seems to always do. Music is a great healer. These songs needed to be out there, this record needed to be made.”

Drawing on their roots in the Southern rock and country heritage, “God and Guns” maintains Lynyrd Skynyrd’s iconic sound but also makes room for contemporary musical ideas. The band is well aware that their songs are sure to attract attention in this politically divided time. The title track harbors a sense of menace and unwillingness to back down that hearken to the band’s earlier days. Other song’s like “That Ain’t My America” have stirred up heat for the band, but they urge listeners to get beyond the title.

With the name Lynyrd Skynyrd comes a heavy responsibility to deliver solid musical entertainment whether on an album or in concert. “We feel like we have to keep the standards high,” says Rossington. “I wouldn’t put this record out, I’d fight not to, if I didn’t think it was good.” The same mentality governs the group as the tour the country sharing both new songs from “God and Guns” and crowd favorites. Bret Michaels

As the lead singer and songwriter for the popular band Poison for more than twenty two  years, Bret Michaels has won the hearts of plenty of ladies, and he had the reality show to prove it. His highly rated series, “Rock of Love” on VH1, propelled Bret Michaels back into the limelight, introducing him to a whole new generation of fans, who are always valued highly when it comes to the business part of Michaels life.

As the front man for the legendary rock band Poison, Bret Michaels sold more than 25 million records that contained an amazing fifteen chart topping singles including “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Something to Believe In,” “Nothing But a Good Time” and of course “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” In the new millennium, Poison’s iconic songs have been featured in countless feature films including “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Grandma’s Boy” and “Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo.”

But Bret Michaels has always been too big for one eighties hair band to contain. In 2003, he released his debut solo album “Songs of Life,” which was followed up two years later with the more mature “Freedom of Sound.” His most recent release “Rock My World” hit the music world in June of 2008, featuring solo songs from his television series “Rock of Love.”

A die hard artists Bret Michaels says, “I would play music whether I made it or not.” He brings that very same attitude to the stage, as he tours the United States this Summer on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s God and Guns Tour. Don’t miss your chance to see Bret Michaels live in concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center.
