Indianapolis music is rife with cover bands, lots of them geared toward a specific genre of music. Bands like Dave and Rae, Band Wagon, and American Cheese perform their own versions of hit songs, getting the Indianapolis nightlife scene moving and shaking to the tunes they know and love. However, there’s no Indianapolis band as prolific and well known as Zanna-Doo, a venerable cover group from Indianapolis that’s played nearly every music venue in the Circle City. One of the hardest working groups in town, you can bet that on any given weekend (and lots of times during the week too), the talented members of Zanna-Doo will be crooning, jamming, and dancing at an Indianapolis bar somewhere in or around Indy.

The grandaddy of all Indianapolis cover groups, Zanna-Doo is comprised of eight members, each bringing their own special talents to the table. The group is headed by “Zanna,” a long time Indiana crooner who’s performed with the likes of Henry Lee Summer, The Starlettes, and The Alligator Brothers. Micheal Read, the band’s keyboard player, toured with ZZ Top, Blue Oyster Cult, and Rush before joining the original Alligator Brothers. Greg, the bassist, is a long time studio musician; drummer Philip Powers teaches drums at an Indianapolis school and has been playing since the age of eight; guitarist Dave Donahoe graduated from The Musicians Institute in California before returning to Indianapolis to play in Punch Judy before joining Zanna-Doo in 2005; and backup singers Anne, Hannah, and Klarc are all young musicians (Hannah is still enrolled in an Indianapolis high school) looking for their next big break.

Unlike most Indianapolis cover bands, Zanna-Doo doesn’t stick to one particular genre of music for their parties. Instead, they have a song list that is huge, spanning hits from the 60’s to today. NUVO Newsweekly calls Zanna-Doo “the encyclopedic cover band” for a reason; chances are if you’ve got a song you want to hear, Zanna-Doo can play it. They’ll do any song you request with one week’s notice, a pretty impressive feat that never fails to please Indianapolis people. Zanna-Doo’s more popular tunes include “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce, the most covered song in the United States (“Brown Eyed Girl”), “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge, and “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince. Zanna-Doo knows how to get the audience any Indianapolis event down on the dance floor; it’s not that hard when you play songs the crowd wants to hear.

Zanna-Doo has been seen at virtually every Indianapolis music venue; they’re particularly popular at Indianapolis restaurants and special corporate events for Indianapolis businesses. Throughout the six Indianapolis cultural districts, Zanna-Doo has performed at The Vogue, the Music Mill, the Rathskeller Restaurant, Champps Americana Bar and Grill, Muldoon’s Irish Pub in Carmel, Indiana, Apres Jack’s, the Moon Dog Tavern, the Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lucas Oil Stadium, the Britton Tavern, Indiana Live Casino…in short, Zanna-Doo is a working band that takes their work seriously. The Indianapolis band may not create their own music or forge their own path, but they certainly know how to put their noses to the grindstone.
