Every Summer Indianapolis downtown sees hoards of people fill up its streets for the revered tradition: Indiana Black Expo. This annual Indianapolis festival transforms the Circle City into a week long celebration of community. Indianapolis music, culture and community are at the forefront of Indiana Black Expo in Indianapolis downtown July 8 to 18. With various Indianapolis events through ten exciting days of the Indiana Black Expo, Indianapolis people will enjoy a host of affordable fun with some special events. Don’t miss the 2010 Indiana Black Expo stating Thursday, July 8 until Sunday, July 18.
The Indiana Black Expo began during the Post Civil Rights Movement era. In an attempt to create a positive community structure that reflected African Americans, the Indiana Black Expo fostered much needed development. After attending an expo in Chicago, Indianapolis religious and civic leaders recognize the need to create a similar event and organization for their Hoosier community. Thus in 1970 they founded the Indiana Black Expo to display positive African American ideas. The ten day long Indianapolis culture event features various symposiums with civic leaders who speak to a number of pressing economic, political and social issues.
Each year Indiana Black Expo serves as a time and space to reflect on past, present and future issues that face African Americans and all people alike. With the support of a number of notable figures such as Reverend Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and more, the Indiana Black Expo has become one of the most well known community gatherings throughout all of central Indiana. Each and every year, Indiana Black Expo continues to be a major economic and social contributor to Indiana and African American communities everywhere.
Held in the Indiana Convention Center and in other Indianapolis attractions downtown, the Black Expo offers ten days, two weekends and one full week of exciting events. These events range from business conference to fashion shows as the Indiana Black Expo serves a wide range of interests from adult to youth. Each day is a different offering to the Indianapolis community, who anticipate Indiana Black Expo each year. Read on for a preview of these upcoming Indianapolis events.
