HVAF (Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation) proudly presents their first ever HVAF Summer Festival in Indianapolis downtown Saturday, July 17. This Indianapolis festival is designed to bring together the Indianapolis community to raise awareness for homeless veterans and their families. Don’t miss this exciting Indianapolis event in the heart of Indianapolis downtown from 10:00 pm to 5:00 pm. All proceeds from the HVAF Summer Festival will benefit the work of the HVAF as they attempt to serve the men and women who have laid down their lives and their livelihoods to serve us and the United States.
HVAF of Indiana Inc. was incorporated as the Far From Home Foundation, Inc. Indiana Chapter in 1993. In June of 1996, this Indianapolis charitable organization completed its first housing project, creating a home for five veterans. As the first supportive housing unit for homeless veterans in Indiana, the HVAF had found its niche. The organization didn’t adopt the name Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation (HVAF) until two years later in 1998. By 2000, the HVAF had established the Veterans Services Center, a place of respite and support of returning veterans trying to get back on their feet. This center provides food, clothing, furniture and personal hygiene items to needy Veterans. Today, the HVAF supports both veterans and their families.
There are as many as 900 homeless veterans in Marion County on any given night and more than 3600 in all of Indiana. Nationwide, homeless veterans number in the 200,000 range, though more than half a million veterans experience homelessness over the course of a year. These men and women served our country in World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, the Gulf War, the military’s anti-drug cultivation efforts in South America and the war in Iraq.
More than 67% of homeless veterans served for at least three years and 89% received and honorable discharge. The effects of war have taken a dastardly toll on our veterans leaving 45% with mental illness and, with considerable overlap, more than 70% suffer from alcohol or substance abuse problems. Many also suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a psychological challenge which can take years of therapy to heal.
You can do your part to help these homeless veterans at the HVAF Summer Festival this Saturday, July 17. This fun filled day is designed for all ages. It includes a poker run, car and motorcycle show, food, games, prizes, raffle drawings with a 50% chance of wining, live entertainment and a cornhole tournament. All games and food will use tickets, which are available at a special presale rate of $.50 per ticket. Presale ticket specials are also available. Purchase twenty tickets and receive five free tickets. Purchase forty tickets and receive twenty free tickets.
