Indianapolis downtown heats up with a cool Summer concert on the Lawn at White River State Park. This outdoor Indianapolis music venue features terrific views of Indianapolis downtown and the White River all while you enjoy your favorite band in a comfortable outdoor setting. Saturday, July 17, 2010, Umphrey’s McGee plays the Lawn at White River State Park with Rusted Root, an alternative rock concert not to be missed. Tickets to this Indianapolis event are $25.00 general admission. The concert gets underway at 7:00 pm.
Umphrey’s McGee is an American progressive rock jam band originating from Chicago. Known for their “progressive improvisation” or “improg,” Umphrey’s McGee has an incredibly distinct sound. Though they are part of the jam band scene, relatable to other groups like Phish and the Grateful Dead, Umphrey’s McGee are much more influenced by progressive rock bands like King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa.
Formed in 1997 at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, the band originally consisted of Brendan Bayliss (guitar), Ryan Stasik (bassist) Joel Cummins (keyboard) and Mike Mirro (drums). Since then the group has replaced Mirro for percussionist Andy Farag and added Kris Myer on drums and vocals and Jake Cinninger on guitar and vocals. Their first studio release Greatest Hits Vol. III featured songs like “Divisions,” “Phil’s Farm,” “FF” and “All in Time.”
By the end of 1998, they were one of the most popular bands in South Bend/ Notre Dame area. Playing for colleges and house parties, they garnered a following of students. Although they played together for many years, the band did not receive there big break until 2004, when they played a coveted late night spot at the Bonnaroo music festival. With an audience of 20,000 in the crowd, they had finally hit their stride. Rolling Stone Magazine even declared to “have become odds-on favorites in the next Phish sweepstakes.”
So far the group has released eleven albums including Live at the Murat, recorded at the Murat Theatre (now known as the Old National Centre), and their most recent release Mantis. Currently, the Indianapolis band enjoys playing festivals across the United States to adoring fans. Saturday they’ll take the stage behind Rusted Root.
Much like Umphrey’s McGee, Rusted Root has been compared to the Grateful Dead for their fusion of bluegrass rock with strong percussion elements. Formed in1988, this band has been playing together for more than two decades, having released eight albums and three EPs. Their songs have been used on the television shows like Ally McBeal, Party of Five and Homicide and on soundtracks for films like Matilda, Ice Age, Pie in the Sky, Race the Sun and many more.
Don’t miss this jam band concert with two strong bands taking the stage one right after the other. Located in the heart of Indianapolis downtown, the Lawn at White River State Park has prime Indianapolis real estate near a host of Indianapolis attractions. With neighbors like the Indianapolis Canal Walk, the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum and Victory Field, the Lawn is the perfect place to enjoy a lovely Summer concert.
