With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum stands as a classic piece of Broadway history. Inspired by the farces of ancient Roman playwright Plautus, specifically his works Pseudolous, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria, the bawdy musical comedy shares the story of a slave named Pseudolus as he attempts to win his freedom. He concocts a scheme whereby he is instrumental in helping his young master woo the girl next door. In exchange for heralding their love, he is to earn his freedom. The problem: she’s already engaged to someone else.
As Pseudolus attempts to help his master Hero win the heart of the lovely Philia, they soon learn that she is betrothed to the renowned warrior Captian Miles Gloriosus, who is on his way to claim his prize. Pseudolus, whose talent for lying rivals the devil himself, uses Philia’s cheery disposition to convince her father Lycus that she has contracted a plague from Crete, which causes its victims to smile endlessly. By offering to isolate her in his master’s house, he buys the love birds some time alone. Though she loves him, she refuses to break her bond to her father insisting that she go through with her marriage.
Its up to Pseudolus and Hero to raise mischief in order to convince (or rather drug) the girl into agreeing. In the process they must evade, her father, her fiance, Hero’s parents and more. With all the elements of classic farce, audiences can count on plenty of door slamming, mistaken identity, puns and satirical comments on social class. With a title that derives from the old line used by vaudeville comedians to start a story, “A funny thing happened on the way to the theatre,” this zany musical comedy even keeps a close link to vaudeville style theatre.
