The church basement kitchen is arguably the center of every congregations social community, and the women who run it find themselves responsible for an entire community. Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre celebrates Church Basement Ladies in their latest musical comedy offering, running July 22 to August 3. This laugh riot musical offers four female perspectives on one Lutheran congregation, but their observations could be of any denomination. Tickets to this Indianapolis theatre event are between $35.00 and $58.00, which includes Chef Odell Ward’s specially prepared buffet, with fruit and salad bar, unlimited coffee, tea and lemonade and free parking. Don’t miss this Indianapolis music and theatre happening as Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre takes a comedic look at what really happens beneath the chapel floor, down in the church basement kitchen.
Hilarity ensues when four Church Basement Ladies take charge of the congregation kitchen, doing their best to organize food, stave off disaster, share recipes and keep the pastor on due course. All this as they attempt to navigate the confusing waters of their changing rural Minnesota church circa 1964. Vivian, Mavis, Karin and her daughter Signe are the Church Basement Ladies. Together these four women serve up food and food for thought all in the face of managing a record breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter fundraiser and a hot July wedding.
Based on the Scandinavian Lutheran humorist writings from Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson, co authors of Growing Up Lutheran, the stars of Church Basement Ladies are at their heart down to earth characters facing familiar problems for citizens across the United States. Regardless if their chosen faith matches with yours, these women connect with audiences simply through the idea of fate.
From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen down to the young bride to be learning the proper order of things, these women come through trials and tribulations finding strength in each other as they share their faith. Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of Church Basement Ladies features actors still cooking from the national tour. They are Karen Pappas as Mavis, Katie Proctor as Karin, Lisa Bark as the young bride to be Signe and Licia Watson as Vivian the matriarch of the kitchen. Beef and Boards favorite Eddie Curry (Footloose, director of The Foreigner and High School Musical) steps into the role of Paster E. L. Gunderson.
In true “Steel Magnolias” fashion, these ladies are the rock of their church as they work together (sometimes barely tolerating each other) to make their congregation proud. Funny and down to earth, audiences will recognize these ladies as they witness the church year unfold from below the house of God. With songs like “The Pale Food Polka,” “My Own Personal Island” and “Mother of the Bride,” this toe tapping musical has a lot of heart shared through a perfect blend of comedy, song, dance and honesty.
