Born and raised on the North Shor of Oahu, Hawaii, Jack Johnson originally aspired to be a world class surfer. Son to the well known surfer Jeff Johnson, Jack showed promise from an early age. At seventeen, he was the youngest invitee to the surfing finals at the Pipeline Master’s on Oahu’s North Shore. However, that fateful competition would end his surfing career before it even began. An accident at the event put over 150 stitches in his forehead. With his dreams of professional surfing dashed, Johnson turned his attention to his second love: music.
His debut album Brushfire Fairytales, released in early 2001, was produced by the noted singer Ben Harper, with Harper and his Wiessenborn lap steel guitar making a special guest appearance on the record. The music was an instant success, receiving plenty of radio air play and spurring Johnson to start his own record label: Brushfire Records (originally as the Moonshine Conspiracy Records). Since then he has released several more records under this label including On and On, In Between Dreams, Sleep Through Static and To the Sea.
A man of many talents, Jack Johnson is also intimately involved in film. Prior to his breakthrough into the music industry, Johnson co directed Thicker Than Water a documentary surf film for which he composed the accompanying soundtrack. In addition and directed and starred in the surf film The September Sessions, working on the film soundtrack once more. Known for his close ties to film soundtracks, Johnson’s record label was contracted to release Sing A Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George, which feature himself among other artists like Ben Harper, G. Love and Zach Gill. It was the first soundtrack to make it to number one on the Billboard Charts since the Bad Boys II soundtrack in August of 2003, and the first animated soundtrack to top the charts since the 1995 Pocahontas.
Currently, Johnson is on his 2010 world tour for To the Sea. His schedule has him globe trotting through Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States. The set list includes hit songs like “You and Your Heart,” “If I had Eyes,” “Taylor,” “Never Know,” “Flake, “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing,” “From the Clouds” and more. Don’t miss Jack Johnson live at the Verizon Wireless Music Center, Friday, July 23 at 7:00 pm.
