Famous Indiana author, journalist and playwright George Ade lived in the northwestern Hoosier town of Brook in Newton County. The antique homestead is known as the Hazelton Mansion, located just two hours from Indianapolis. The George Ade Home Association owns and operates the historic house, which they restored after it was vacant for 20 years. It’s free to visit this Indiana attraction, and it makes for a fun day trip from Indianapolis.
George Ade was in the height of his career during the early Twentieth century, a time referred to as the Golden Age of Indiana Literature. His best known piece is Fables and Slang, a compilation of material from his work as a columnist in Chicago. For more than 50 years, George Ade was publishing a huge variety of works. he was considered one of the four-member writing dream team, which also included Booth Tarkington, James Whitcomb Riley and Meredith Nicholson. A famous photograph of the four brilliant literary artists hangs on a a wall inside Hazelton mansion in Brook, Indiana.
The two-story house is now somewhat like an Indiana museum. In a ground-level office room, George Ade’s desk is displayed. He used the desk while writing in Chicago, and then in the Crossroads of America when he returned to Newton County. Aside from his brief stint in the bordering Illinois, Ade spent most of his life living in this small western Indiana county.
George Ade was known to host big name visitors to Hazelton Mansion. Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft both visited his home while on the 1908 and 1912 campaign trails. The mansion is located right next to the George Ade Memorial Health Care Center, and it’s set back from the road slightly. A roadside sign marks the spot for travelers on Indiana highway 16, making this day trip destination easy to find.
Just a few counties away from Brook, several other attractions can be found. The Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area and Tippecanoe River State Park are both super fun outdoor getaway destinations in Pulaski County. The Hooseir Bat Company offers preplanned tours of their manufacturing facility in Valparaiso. While you’re up north, don’t forget to lounge on the beach at Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore.
