This weekend in Indianapolis music, southern fried arena rock comes to Noblesville, Audio Recon shows off its stable of beat makers and trend setters, and a bazillion other shows fill Indianapolis bars with the sounds of the city. It’s a bit of a slow weekend in Indianapolis music wise; the city seems to be gearing up for the slew of Indianapolis festivals happening in September, like the Indy Jazz Fest (next week), ORANJE (two weeks), and the Indy Irish Fest. But just because there’s no quantity in Indy this weekend doesn’t mean there’s no quality.
The biggest show this weekend is definitely going on at Noblesville’s Verizon Wireless Music Center. Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and The Whigs will be bringing their respective styles of garage rock to the big stage on Friday, September 3rd. Kings of Leon began their career as the South’s answer to The Strokes, but have since morphed into radio rock superstars with their last two albums, Because of the Times and Only By the Night. The Black Keys are fresh off the release of their latest gem, Brothers, an intricately crafted foray into funk, soul, and blues from a classic electro-blues duo. And The Whigs, always a band that seems to be on the cusp of breaking it big, will bring a raucous garage rock flavor to the arena. It should be a great Indianapolis event even if you’ve only got a little blues in your soul.
If break beats and samples are more your flavor, head to The Vogue on Friday night. An Audio Recon showcase called The Now School will bring some of the top Indianapolis DJs to a vaunted Indianapolis music venue to show off their skills at the turntable. Audio Recon is an Indianapolis record company of sorts that largely deals with mp3’s, but also puts out several CD’s a year. The Indianapolis business released its first product in 2006 andhas grown exponentially since then, signing new artists and releasing more and more media each year. Audio Recon also hosts plenty of concerts at Indianapolis bars and venues throughout the city. The Now School will be a showcase of some of AR’s talent, including performances by DJ Shiva, Oreo Jones, Yeti One, TJ Reynolds, Andy D, and more. Head to the Vogue if you wanna experience some bumpin’ Indianapolis nightlife.
Deserving mention are the Labor Day Street Fair and a show at the Indiana University Auditorium with Vampire Weekend, Beach House, and Dum Dum Girls, both happening Monday. The Labor Day Street Fair is somewhat of a prelude to the Indy Jazz Fest: live jazz by Clifford Ratliff, Rob Dixon, and Bill Lancton will be happening for free in front of The Jazz Kitchen and Yats, and delicious grilled vittles will also be provided. The Vampire Weekend show will likely be even bigger than the Kings of Leon/Black Keys concert; the incredibly divisive band has shot to the top of the charts in the past year with the release of their newest album, Contra. There are plenty of other great shows going on this weekend, so check out the handy Indianapolis show calendar below to see what you’re missing:
