Life in Central Indiana can sure get boring after a while. Sure, there’s plenty of cool Indianapolis things to do like going to an Indianapolis Colts game at Lucas Oil Stadium or making your eardrums bleed at an Indianapolis music concert, but anything can turn to routine after a long enough time. To avoid the stale Indianapolis blues, many families take vacations. Some go to Indiana state parks, some take day trips from Indianapolis, others can afford to fly all the way across the United States to some popular tourist destination. But the problem with vacations is that they take lots of money and lots of time, two things that are in short supply for most families. Luckily for Indianapolis children, however, you can take a round trip flight to Egypt in an afternoon, all for less than the price of a meal at an Indianapolis restaurant. You don’t even need any frequent flier miles: just head to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum for their newest permanent exhibit, Take Me There: Egypt.

Many museum displays about Egypt are only concerned with its ancient history, the dramatic days of pharaohs and gods and mummies. Take Me There: Egypt is unique in that it focuses on modern day Egyptian society, providing a cross cultural learning experience that will broaden your and your child’s horizon. At Take Me There: Egypt, children can go shopping at a traditional Egyptian market, drink coffee and tea at a replica Egyptian restaurant (though not as good as the Luxor Restaurant), and even learn about Egyptian money at the currency exchange. Participants will also get the chance to hear traditional Egyptian music and participate in the sebou, a celebration welcoming a new child to a family. Displays are brightly colored, incredibly informative, and, above all, lots and lots of fun. Each exhibit is interactive, involving kids in their own learning so much that they won’t even realize their brains are expanding.

Your child’s learning experience doesn’t have to end once the virtual plane makes a smooth landing back in Indy, either. At the Indianapolis museum‘s website, there are plenty of interactive Take Me There: Egypt games for your kid to play, ranging from “Explore Virtual Egypt,” an adventure game where players are let loose in Cairo, “What Do Egyptian Kids Wear?” a dress up game, and “Where Is Egypt?,” a game that allows kids to explore geographical landmarks of one of the oldest countries in the world. So if Indianapolis is starting to get a little stale, why not take a day trip halfway across the world to Egypt? It’s possible with the newest permanent exhibit at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, Take Me There: Egypt.
