Hispanic Heritage Fiesta, Sunday, September 19, noon to 4:00 p.m.: Coming right up on September 19, 2010 is the Hispanic Heritage Fiesta, which will include live Spanish music, dance exhibitions, tempting Mexican food and special activities for the Indianapolis children in attendance. This is one of the main celebrations in Indy of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15 every year. The Indianapolis event at the Zoo augments another similar but much bigger public party, the Fiesta Indianapolis, another Indianapolis festival that honors the colorful Mexican heritage. Some 35,000 revelers are expected to be at the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza and American Legion Plaza in downtown Indianapolis to enjoy the Fiesta Indianapolis. The Hispanic Heritage Fiesta and the Fiesta Indianapolis both promise to be extraordinary this year, since it’s the year of Mexico’s bicentennial.
Meet a Hero, Be a Hero, Saturday, September 25, 2010, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Free to members, this event is open to the public for the price of admission to the Zoo. This is a cash award of $100,000, and entrants are gathered from all around the world. This year’s winner is Iain Douglas-Hamilton, president of a group called Save the Elephants. Meet him and the past laureate and other finalists during this happening. There are some great activities for kids planned, conservation-related to start them off young down the righteous path.
