The Athenaeum, in downtown Indianapolis, is a very special place. And the Athenaeum Theatre is unique among Indianapolis performing arts venues. A historic cultural center for the German-American community in Indianapolis, the Athenaeum Theatre and its many related facilities have exerted a great and lasting effect on Indianapolis culture.
The airy, comfortable auditorium is framed by huge windows, and nicely-appointed details around the ceiling and the front of the proscenium area. While the Athenaeum Theatre is the site for many different live performance events, the theatre itself and all its many accoutrements are available to the public for rental. The charming space offers accommodations for anywhere from 340 to 440 people, depending on the type of seating your event requires. Typical amenities would include use of the facility’s stage, lighting, green room and eight dressing rooms, backstage restrooms, house manager and technicians, plus general housekeeping services.
Other options are assistance in event coordination, rental of the Athenaeum’s grand piano, catering and bartending services and the use of other rooms at the Athenaeum such as its various meeting rooms and an outdoor Biergarten.
Most of the Indianapolis events staged at the Athenaeum Theatre are musical concerts or recitals, but the Young Actors Theatre trains and performs there on a regular basis. Other important live performance groups that regularly strut their stuff at the Athenaeum Theatre include the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra and the Indianapolis Maennerchor, the longest-enduring men’s choir in the United States.
The opulence and historical grandeur of the Athenaeum, coupled with the in-house know-how of those who run it, have made the Athenaeum Theatre one of Indianapolis’ premier gathering places, as well as an important Indianapolis music and performing arts venue.
