Indianapolis is slowly gearing up for the most frenetic of all holiday seasons. Within the next few weeks, Monument Circle will be ablaze with Christmas lights during the annual Circle of Lights celebration, Indianapolis shopping malls will be putting up their best sale prices, Indianapolis media will start playing Christmas carols and jingle bell laden commercials, and Indianapolis attractions will be kicking off their holiday events in style. Many Indy institutions have cheery Christmas themed events going on throughout December (including the Indianapolis Children’s Museum‘s Jolly Days), and the Indianapolis Zoo is no different. The Indianapolis Zoo will kick off its popular Christmas at the Zoo event on December 3, 2010; you’ll have opportunities to soak up the sights and sounds of the season through December 30 (excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

The 2009 Christmas at the Zoo event was a smash hit in the Circle City, and this year’s iteration looks to build on that success. For starters, the environs of the Indianapolis Zoo are getting a whole new layer of jolly thanks to the Christmas lights strung up all around the grounds. A massive, two story Christmas tree will be on display at the White River Gardens Rotunda during Christmas at the Zoo, and all your favorite Indianapolis Zoo animals will be on display. But holiday aesthetics are just the beginning of this festive Indianapolis event.

There are also plenty of Indianapolis things to do at Christmas at the Zoo. For Indianapolis music fans, there will be carol singing around a campfire, and the choirs from several Indianapolis schools will be on hand to lend a melody or two to the zoo. Indianapolis children and adults with a sweet tooth will love Santa’s Sweet Shop, which is exactly what it sounds like. Zoo guests can purchase freshly baked cookies and cinnamon rolls, caramel chunks, rice crispy treats, caramel apples, and much more. You can also take a holiday themed train ride through the zoo’s grounds or take in the Polar Express, a 4-D ride only at the Indianapolis Zoo. And cold-loving animals aren’t the only ones you’ll see during Christmas at the Zoo: there will also be a Holiday Dolphin Show going on every day during this event. But there’s one more surprise: if you come to Christmas at the Zoo on December 23, you’ll be there when Santa makes his annual stop at the Zoo.

Much like last year, this year’s Christmas at the Zoo celebration isn’t limited to the zoo itself. Also going on December 3 – 30, 2010 is the Woodland Wonderland at the Hilbert Conservatory and Gardens. White lights will be strung all over the always green environs of the Conservatory, transforming it into a stunning sight for your whole family. A timed light show set to music will be going on at the Hilbert Conservatory at set times each day, and plenty of other surprises remain to be found at Woodland Wonderland. The Garden Gift Shop has also been transformed into the Christmas Shoppe, a charming little place where you can buy ornaments and gifts.
The 2010 iteration of Christmas at the Zoo promises to be fun for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned Zoo veteran or visiting the Circle City for the first time. A festive holiday atmosphere will lift your spirits at the Zoo as you take in the twinkling lights, cheerful songs, and unique Christmas attractions like the Holiday Dolphin Show and the Holiday Train Ride. And don’t forget about the Woodland Wonderland at Hilbert Conservatory and Gardens, another part of Christmas at the Zoo. Christmas at the Zoo runs from December 3 to December 30, 2010; Santa will make a special visit December 23. The Zoo opens every day at noon, and Christmas at the Zoo activities run from 5:00 to 9:00 every evening. Zoo members get in to Christmas at the Zoo for free, while non-members must pay regular admission fees. However, if you donate a new hat, scarf, or gloves to St. Mary’s Children Center, you’ll receive a dollar off your admission price. Make sure you stop by the Indianapolis Zoo from December 3 – 30, 2010 to experience the magic of Christmas at the Zoo!
