Garfield Park and Conservatory Turns Red and Green December 2010

It’s finally December, and you know what that means: the Circle City is throwing on some tinsel, stringing up its lights, and getting ready to welcome Santa Claus in Central Indiana. Holiday events are taking place at Indianapolis attractions everywhere: so far, FunCityFinder.com has been keeping you up to date on all the Christmas goings on around Indianapolis and its surrounding communities, from Polar Late Night at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum to Holiday on the Prairie at Conner Prairie Living History Museum. But it’s not just Indianapolis museums and destination spots that are getting the holiday treatment. Indianapolis parks are also spreading Christmas cheer with a bevy of holiday events and decorations. We all know one of the most green Indianapolis parks is Garfield Park Conservatory. They’ve got half the Christmas color formula down all year round, but come December the friendly park staff will be injecting a little red into the Conservatory to get ready for Christmas. Holiday events at Garfield Park Conservatory are running all through December; take a look at the Indianapolis events going on below:

Conservatory Crossing

All through the month of December, Garfield Park Conservatory will be decked out for Christmas with Conservatory Crossing. This transformation of Garfield Park Conservatory has been present at the park since November 26, and it won’t be torn down until Santa has come and gone and all the presents have been opened (December 31). The Indiana Rail Road Company has been kind enough to help Garfield Park Conservatory install a complete model train village inside the conservatory. Your Indianapolis children will be delighted at the tiny chugging scale models winding all through the conservatory.

Poinsettias spread throughout the park lend a splash of red to the greenery of the conservatory, and plenty of Christmas lights add festive color to the whole affair. Conservatory Crossing is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from November 26 to December 31. It will be open until 8:00 p.m. December 18-23, and it will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Guests will also enjoy discounted admission rates of $2 for adults, $1 for seniors or youth, and $5 for families through the duration of Conservatory Crossing.

Holiday Crafts

Budding Indianapolis arts fiends will love the chance to bust out the glitter, yarn, and pipe cleaners at the Holiday Crafts holiday event at Garfield Park Conservatory. For one day only, Indianapolis children and their parents can express themselves through crafts at the conservatory. Participants are invited to make Christmas cards to send to family and loved ones for that personal touch. You an also fill out your Christmas tree decorations with homemade Christmas ornaments at the Holiday Crafts celebration. Holiday Crafts occurs on one day only, Saturday, December 4, 2010, and runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Price of admission is $4, but it’s well worth the memories.

Christmas at Garfield

Santa is going to be pretty exhausted before Christmas even gets here. As it is, he’s gallivanting all over Indianapolis in the month of December, making stops at the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo, and plenty of other places. He’s also going to be showing up at Garfield Park Conservatory as part of their Christmas at Garfield holiday event. Santa’s elves will be on hand at the Garfield Park Arts Center to help your kids make crafts and have a jolly good time, and Mrs. Claus will be handing out cookies and more at the Burrello Family Center. The big man himself will also be on hand for Christmas lists, photos, and laughter. This holiday event at Garfield Park Conservatory is absolutely free and takes place on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Candlelight Crossing

The weekend before Christmas, Garfield Park Conservatory takes their holiday events down a notch. All the trains, poinsettias, and beautiful decorations of Conservatory Crossing will still be on display, but the Candlelight Crossing evening reception will allow you to sit back, relax, and just take it all in. Holiday treats will be available for participants, and the whole Conservatory will be bathed in the soothing glow of candles and Christmas lights. Lean back with a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy the last moments of peace and quiet you’ll have before the kids tear into their presents on Christmas Day. Candlelight Crossing takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, December 17. Tickets are $5 per person or $15 per family.

If you want to step away from all the frenetic hullabaloo taking place around downtown Indianapolis and beyond, why not step into the quietly festive atmosphere of Garfield Park Conservatory during the month of December? Plenty of holiday events at Garfield Park Conservatory will make sure you’re jolly by the time Santa arrives on Christmas Day. Make Christmas cards and ornaments at Holiday Crafts, meet Santa at Christmas at Garfield, relax with a hot chocolate at Candlelight Crossing, or take in the model train village all month during Conservatory Crossing. Holiday events at Garfield Park Conservatory are sure to get you and your family in the holiday mood.
