Christmas isn’t a joyous time for everybody. There are plenty of families right here in Indianapolis that can’t afford to pay bills on time or eat regularly, let alone purchase gifts for friends and family. Of course, the ones that are hurt the most by poverty are children, and children suffer doubly during the holiday season. While all their friends get shiny toys and plenty of attention, disadvantaged children are left out in the cold. Luckily, that’s where the Indianapolis community and Indianapolis non-profit organizations get involved. For the past ten years, WRTV Channel 6 (an Indianapolis television station) has been organizing a toy drive with the support of Indianapolis businesses and residents of the Circle City. This holiday season, you’ll have a few opportunities to donate toys to those less fortunate than you and your friends. After all, isn’t giving what the Christmas season is really about?

The WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive is a collaboration between the Indianapolis media outlet and Gleaners Food Bank, a nearly thirty year old organization that serves over 400 charities around Indiana. Normally Gleaners conducts food drives and donations, but they also get involved in other charity functions, like the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive. Here in Indianapolis, this annual Christmas giving opportunity has been going on since 2001. In its ten year history, the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive has helped over 100,000 Indiana children have a merry Christmas and a happy new year. After all the toys are collected from donation dates and locations, FedEx Express collects the toys and somehow manages to distribute them all before Christmas.

Everyone from Indianapolis schools and organizations to individual Indianapolis people are invited to donate to the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive. The organizers will accept new, unwrapped toys for newborns through twelve year olds. Though all donations are accepted, the group is especially looking for gifts for infants aged 0 to 12 months and older children aged 10 to 12 years. You may also make monetary donations to Gleaners Food Bank at the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive. If you know a family in need, encourage them to register to receive toys from the Toy Drive. They can register at any participating agency and must bring proper documentation. For more information on registration (and a complete list of participating agencies), visit the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive’s Toy Request page.
You’ll have several opportunities throughout December to donate to the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive at businesses throughout Indy and downtown Indianapolis. The Feldco Windows, Siding & Doors Collection (8818 Corporation Drive) has been running since November 29 and will finish on December 3, 2010. Those who donate at this collection site will also receive a free $100 gift card; it’s a donation that gives back in karma and home improvement! The AAA Service Center Collection (1123 AAA Way in Carmel, Indiana) will take place on December 9, 2010, and the Kaplan University Collection (9000 Keystone Crossing) will be held on December 14, 2010. The final collection date will be the Dial One Heating and Air Conditioning Collection on December 16, 2010, which will take place on the Northwest Quadrant of Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis. With all these donation locations and dates, it’s your own fault if you can’t find the time to donate to the WRTV Channel 6 Toy Drive.
