Before they brought out the desolate madness of rural Texas or threw an accomplice in a North Dakota wood chipper, the Coen brothers chronicled the story of a jealous bar owner intent on discovering the truth about his wife. The film was Blood Simple, an indie noir classic that explored several dark parts of the human psyche while keeping one foot rooted in at least one lighter part: humor. On January 7, 2011, Indianapolis residents will get the chance to see this classic 1984 film at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Blood Simple will be showing at the Indianapolis museum‘s Toby Theater as the first event of this year’s Winter Nights Film Series.
Every iteration of the Winter Nights Film Series follows a particular theme, and the 2011 version is no different. This year, the IMA is showcasing noir and neo-noir films, films that deal with the cruel underbelly of society in a visually striking, instantly recognizable fashion, and Blood Simple is a perfect example of the genre. If you enjoy twisted conspiracies, mystery, and sleaze, you’ll love Blood Simple. Hannah Brown of the New York Post said it was “like watching Alfred Hitchcock try to solve a Rubik’s cube at a roadside diner,” while the Portland Oregonian said Blood Simple “remains a tight, beautifully ugly, neo-noir classic.” Even if you’ve seen the film several times, you shouldn’t miss this Indianapolis event at the Indianapolis Museum of Art: the film will be shown on 35mm film, giving it that extra dirty noir edge you wouldn’t be able to get from your DVD player at home.
