As the world community becomes more and more aware of the problems caused by global warming and our current energy crisis, bicycling has become a cheap, fun way to travel that’s growing in popularity. Many American cities, including Indianapolis, are spearheading initiatives to make their streets more bicycle friendly, adding bike lanes, bike racks, and with the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, more places to take your two wheeled friend. However, long before the global conscience began promoting bike use, Willie Weir was pedaling around the world. Weir has been to the Balkans, through the Deep South, and in the midst of tribal South Africa, along the way gathering plenty of tales of derring do, danger dodging, and efficient, emission free travel. On Wednesday, January 19, 2011, Willie Weir will delight Indianapolis residents at the Central Library downtown with an iteration of his lecture series, Any Port in a Storm: The Cycling Adventures of Willie Weir.

Any Port in the Storm: The Cycling Adventures of Willie Weir chronicles the award winning author’s trek through Portugal with his wife, Kat Marriner. You’ll hear harrowing tales of sheep herding, wine drinking, and wild animal avoidance. Weir has a unique sense of humor that shines through his totally true tales; it’ll have you and your family longing for the open vineyards, lonely roads, and sunny skies of Portugal. But Any Port in a Storm isn’t just about Weir and his adventures in Portugal. It’s also about managing a trip on a budget, forgoing common tourist attractions for glimpses of the real European sights to see: the people and the culture. The Central Library in downtown Indianapolis is the place to be if you’re a bicycle junkie, interested in our neighbors across the Atlantic, or just curious about what it means to have an international biking adventure.

Willie Weir has traveled over 60,000 miles on his bike, but he’s more than just a bicycle advocate. Weir is no stranger to the lectern or to the writing desk. An award winning author, photographer, and journalist whose work has earned him gold and bronze Lowell Thomas Awards from the Society of American Travel Writers, Weir has a routine commentator spot on KUOW, a public radio station in his hometown of Seattle. He’s also a regular columnist in Adventure Cyclist magazine. In addition, Willie Weir is the author of the non-fiction tome Spokesong, which chronicles his cycling adventures around the globe, from the Balkans to South Africa. While Spokesong takes you along for the ride through several portions of the world, you can only hear Weir’s Portugal tales during Any Port in the Storm: The Cycling Adventures of Willie Weir in downtown Indianapolis.

Rick Steves, author of Europe Through the Back Door, says that “…reading Weir is like bouncing along on the back of his bike, hanging on to this poet/guide who knows just which potholes offer the most travel thrills.” It’s safe to say that, with a speaking tour stretching from Seattle to Montana to the heart of Central Indiana, listening to Willie Weir is much the same way. If you come to this Indianapolis event on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, be prepared to take a breathtaking, thigh aching ride through the serene countryside of Portugal with a speaker who’s biked it all. If you somehow miss Any Port in the Storm: The Cycling Adventures of Willie Weir, you can catch the cyclist again on February 8, 2011, when he’ll be the keynote speaker for an Indianapolis Greenways Foundation meeting at the downtown Indianapolis Marriott Hotel. Indianapolis health fans, cycling enthusiasts, and traveling aficionados would do well to head to the Central Library in downtown Indy on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 to catch Any Port in a Storm: The Cycling Adventures of Willie Weir.
