Earth House Collective is all about uniting various facets of the Indianapolis art scene into one cohesive, friendly whole, and they have a lot of fun in the process. Continuing the tradition of excellent events at the Indianapolis coffee shop and collective is The Encyclopedia Show, a multi discipline literary performing arts show that combines humor, poetry, vaudeville, and plenty of outrageous back and forth. The next segment of The Encyclopedia Show (which will be The Encyclopedia Show Series 1 Volume 2) will take place at Earth House Collective in Indianapolis on Wednesday, January 19, 2011. Prepare to find new life in the dusty tome of knowledge that your mother bought from a door to door salesman in 1976, because The Encyclopedia Show is irreverent improv like you’ve never seen.

Each iteration of The Encyclopedia Show takes a subject culled at random from–you guessed it–an encyclopedia. The performers (which usually includes poets, Indianapolis artists, Indianapolis musicians, and comedians) then use their best improv skills to examine all facets of the topic, from the hilarious to the politically charged. The end result is a mish mash of colorful monologues, mind bending poetry, and a top notch Indianapolis event that’ll have you appreciating the vibrant culture rampant in the Circle City. For this particular iteration of The Encyclopedia Show, participants will be showcasing performances revolving around the Moon. This performance of The Encyclopedia Show isn’t the first to come through Indy; Series 1 Volume 1 (about bears) took place in October of 2010 at the IndyFringe Building and featured The Last Domino, Liar Mouth, Eric Woods, Saint Peace, and many more.
The Encyclopedia Show isn’t native to Indianapolis. Actually, it was started in Indy’s northern big brother, Chicago, by Robbie Q Telfer and Shanny Jean Maney in 2008. The group has proclaimed its “ongoing mission to chafe against logic and proof, find meaning in obfuscation, and wrest truth from fact once and for all,” and so far they’ve been pretty successful in the Windy City. The group won an Orgie Theatre Award in both 2009 and 2010, and they’re currently in their third series; topics in Chicago have included Brains, the Periodic Table of Elements, and the Village of Schaumburg (a suburb of Chicago). Branches of The Encyclopedia Show have cropped up in cities across the United States, from San Francisco to Providence.
