Laughin’ on the Avenue Features “King of Venice Beach” in 2011

Forget Crackers Comedy Club for one night. When people want their fill of comedy in Indianapolis, they head down to the Madame Walker Theatre one day a month for a star studded night of entertainment. That’s when the Indiana Avenue theater hosts “Laughin’ on the Avenue,” a monthly showcase that takes nationally known comedians and puts them on the Indy stage. Residents are in stitches each month as one of the most respected Indianapolis theaters takes things down a notch and revels in the lighter side of life for an evening. The first Laughin’ on the Avenue event of 2011 promises to be a big one; “The King of Venice Beach,” Michael Colyar, will be doing his inspirational (and hilarious) routine on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, and he’ll be joined by Detroit’s Mary Ann DeMoss in a show hosted by B-Phlat, the self-proclaimed “Flyest Comedienne Around” from St. Louis. These three performers are going to give it all they’ve got for the January 2011 Laughin’ on the Avenue.

Laughin’ on the Avenue usually brings nationally known comedians (and comediennes) into its lineup, and this month is no different. The headliner for the January 2011 Laughin’ on the Avenue will be Michael Colyar, a comedian and actor who has been performing at venues across the United States for almost thirty years. Colyar got his start as the “King of Venice Beach,” performing five hour long comedy sessions every Saturday and Sunday along the beach’s boardwalk. Colyar stood out on Venice Beach because of his penchant for combining inspirational anecdotes and tales of his life with gut busting humor. In 1990, Michael Colyar won the first ever Star Search contest, earning him $100,000, but Colyar promptly donated half of his winnings to charities around Los Angeles. Since that early victory, Colyar’s career has only grown; he was in a few movies throughout the 90’s (Poetic Justice, House Party 3, and most recently The Princess and the Frog in 2010), hosted his own talk show on cable (BET Live From LA), and took his comedy show on tour throughout the country.

Accompanying Michael Colyar in the January 2011 Laughin’ on the Avenue is Detroit area comedienne Mary Ann DeMoss. Voted “Detroit’s Funniest Female,” DeMoss has been featured on Comedy Jam Live on Comcast and BET’s Comic View. These two comedians are funny enough on their own, but the January 2011 Laughin’ on the Avenue will be hosted by St. Louis comedienne B-Phlat. Like Colyar, B-Phlat combines comedy with a message, eschewing typical cheap gags for funny stories from her life that also pack a bit of a punch. B-Phlat has appeared on countless television shows and specials, including Show Me St. Louis, a five year stint on Comic View, HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Comics Without Borders, and Showtime at the Apollo. B-Phlat should be an excellent choice to keep the night moving and will be a great supplement to Michael Colyar and Mary Ann DeMoss.
