Ah, the circus. We all probably have fond memories of the circus from our childhoods: the smell of warm popcorn and hot elephant waste, the creepy clowns and the overenthusiastic barkers, the screaming children and the parents who look about ready to scream themselves. Actually, looking back, the circus can be a pretty scary place, what with the flaming hoops, lions, and deformed sideshow people. But if your circus memories are still full of sweet things and bright colors, all you need is one glimpse of the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow to turn your sugar coated memory sour. The Squidling Brothers present a circus show like you’ve never seen, reveling in all the darker, more mysterious aspects of one of the world’s oldest distractions with its tongue firmly planted in cheek (or, depending on the scene, out of it). If you’ve got a taste for the bizarre and the stomach for the disturbing, you need to get down to White Rabbit Cabaret in Indianapolis on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 for an unflinching look at the macabre, the unsettling…the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow.

Led by “living cartoon and natural born weirdo” Jelly Boy T. Clown and his partner in crime, Betty Bloomerz, “The Sideshow Doll of Darkness,” the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow takes its viewers on a journey through the amazing feats the human body can endure and the strange forms that same body can take. There will be beds of glass and nails, hooks in the skin, strongman antics, burlesque style hijinks, and the Squidling Brothers’ take on sword swallowing, all of which is sure to make you sleep a little less soundly. Along the way at this Indianapolis nightlife event, you’ll experience the talents of The Illustrated Penguin, the Baron Von Geiger (the “World’s Strangest Strongman”), and Jelly Boy T. Clown’s brother, Matterz Squidling the Impenetrable Music Man, who will likely give you a dose of Indianapolis music you won’t hear again. Those Indianapolis people worried about possible injury or mental illness need not worry: all the performers at the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow are trained professionals who have been working in the business for over five years.

As is fitting for a circus troupe that’s the very image of reckless abandon, a band that has the soundtrack for reckless abandon will also be playing at White Rabbit Cabaret with the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow. Jason and the Punknecks, “the most dangerous band in country music,” will be bringing their breakneck rockabilly assault to White Rabbit Cabaret’s stage to whip the crowd into a hell-raisin’ frenzy perfect for the antics of the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow. Comprised of the duo of Jason and Polly Punkneck, these thrashin’ hillbillies have been tearing up stages across the United States for the past six years, and it doesn’t look like they’re stopping any time soon. Where else but Indy can you get punk fused honky tonk and tongue in cheek bodily mutilation at the same Indianapolis bar?

So if power drills through the nose, ice picks to the head, and metal hooks to the flesh don’t make your stomach a little squeamish and rockabilly from Nashville doesn’t make your ears bleed, the White Rabbit Cabaret on Tuesday night is probably the place for you. Only there can you witness the shadowy fun of Matterz Squidling the Impenetrable Music Man, Jelly Boy T. Clown, the Illustrated Penguin, Betty Bloomerz, and all the other adventurous misfits of the Squidling Brothers Circus Sideshow. Throw in Jason and the Punknecks, and you’ve got a recipe for a rollicking, illicit good time that’s not suitable for the whole family. Indianapolis children be warned: this is NOT the Ringling Brothers circus. There are no elephants and probably no popcorn, but this Indianapolis event will have plenty of laughs, plenty of beer, and plenty of disturbing goings on.
