Joyce K. Jensen is a contemporary realist painter based out of Indianapolis who works primarily in watercolor. Her award-winning watercolors are known for their attention to detail and for the depth and brilliance of their colors. Genres include still-lifes, portraits and landscapes, and this Indianapolis artist has created a popular series featuring vintage toys, maps and marbles.
Although she studied art in her youth, Joyce K. Jensen didn’t become a full-time professional artist until her mid-fifties, after a career as a freelance magazine and business writer. She earned her BA from Indiana University – Purdue University (IUPUI), graduating with Highest Distinction in 1987. Her Indianapolis art education has included classes at the Indianapolis Art Center and workshops with Birgit O’Connor and James Toogood.
Joyce says, “I’m drawn to the beauty in everyday objects, and in particular to how light affects color, and how light and color together create form. I work most often in watercolor because of its luminosity, and because I’m able to build intense color through layering and glazing. Color is music for the eyes, and I want my paintings to give the viewer a sense of peace and harmony.” Her paintings have been published in International Artist magazine, and the book Splash 8: Watercolor Discoveries from North Light Books. They have also been chosen several times for the Paint the Parks Top 100 and the Paint America Top 100.
Her works appear regularly in national and regional exhibitions, and Joyce K. Jensen has been juried into the Indiana Artisan program developed by Lt. Governor Becky Skillman. Her painting “Galaxy” was awarded an Honorable Mention at the prestigious 2008 Biennial: Contemporary American Realism exhibition at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, and she has received many other awards and honors. She has won accolades from the Hoosier Salon, the Watercolor Society of Indiana, the Indiana State Fair (every year from 2006 to 2010), and in 2010 she won a Merit Award from the Indiana Artist Club Member Show, held at the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, Indiana. If you’re interested in buying one of Joyce K. Jensen’s pieces, some of her work is for sale at the Sullivan Munce Cultural Center in Zionsville, Indiana.
