Indiana is home to some beautiful muses. The multicolored squares of farmland, the vast stretches of untrammeled forest, the impressive architecture of downtown Indianapolis, the quiet historical aura of the many small towns that dot the countryside: all of it can be the impetus of that perfect painting, song, or sculpture. It’s no surprise, then, that Indiana is home to a wealth of artists, from the hobbyist whose paintings will never leave his basement to the professional whose work hangs in Indianapolis art galleries. Naturally, since each Indiana artist comes from a different part of the Hoosier State, each piece of Indiana art will have its own distinct flair.
One group that celebrates the artistic diversity of Indiana’s art community is the Indiana Artist Club, an organization that’s been active since it was founded in 1917 by several notable Indiana artists, including T.C. Steele, Otto Stark, and Marie Goth. And since 1992, the Indiana Artist Club has been bringing the top artists from around the Hoosier State to Indianapolis for their annual juried exhibition. If you’d like to glimpse a smattering of the top artists from Indiana, head to the 79th Annual Juried Exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, running from April 16 to June 5, 2011.
This year’s iteration of the Indiana Artist Club Juried Exhibit will feature the works of 52 artists from cities and towns across the Hoosier State, including Bloomington, Lafayette, Muncie, Indy, Crown Point, and countless others. Indiana and Indianapolis artists who will be present at the 79th Annual Juried Exhibit include Jean Smith, John Oilar, Elaine C. Wolfe, Carol Fisher, Beverly Mathis, Donna Shortt, Robert Bratton, Joyce K. Jensen, Laurie Wright, and Richard D. Hess. On the second day of the Indianapolis art event, the Indiana Artist Club will announce the winners of the exhibit. Each award, including Best of Show, Jury Awards of Distinction, First and Second Place awards, and several Merit Awards, will include a cash prize and plenty of distinction. Last year’s winners included Bonita Snellenberger (Best of Show for Golden Venezia), Dana Wright-Wiggins (First Prize for Harnessed Power), and J. Anna Roberts (Second Prize for Fire Dryer).
Each year, the Indiana Artist Club selects an influential Midwestern artist to judge the competition, and the 79th Annual Juried Exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art is no different. This year’s juror will be Harold Gregor, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Gregor has been working in art since the 1970’s, when he established himself as a member of the photo realist movement, painting farm buildings and the dramatic pastoral beauty of the Midwestern countryside. Since that time, he has expanded his scope to include several different modes. Nowadays, Harold Gregor continues to work in photorealism, but he also appoints his talents to Flatscapes (aerial views of Midwestern landscapes that employ large swatches of color), abstract “trail” paintings, and Vibrascapes.
If you want to see some of the best Indiana has to offer when it comes to fine art, you need to find the time to visit the 79th Annual Juried Exhibit of the Indiana Artist Club at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This Indianapolis event will be running from Saturday, April 16 through Sunday, June 5, 2011, and prizes will be awarded on Sunday, April 17 by this year’s juror, Harold Gregor. The Indianapolis art exhibit will be in the Indianapolis museum‘s North Hall Gallery, and if you’re looking to spruce up your newest Indianapolis real estate acquisition, most of the work on display at the 79th Annual Juried Exhibit will be for sale. The exhibit is absolutely free with admission to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so come on down to downtown Indianapolis from April 16 to June 5, 2011 to get a look at the artistic fruits of the Hoosier State.
