Crawl for a Cause: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Edition

Have you ever wished that your alcohol consumption could do something good for the world? After you’ve downed your sixth beer at an Indianapolis bar, you probably feel pretty good about the world, but the warm and fuzzies aren’t helping Mother Earth out a whole lot. As of now, the best thing you can do with your drinking is diligently recycling your empties, but that doesn’t do much aside from keeping landfills from swallowing Indianapolis. But NUVO Newsweekly has been trying to change all that with their Crawl for a Cause event, a recurring caravan of Indy alcoholics who want to make their fair city a better place by doing what they do best: drinking. If free beer and keeping Indianapolis clean are important issues to you, you should put on your crawling shoes and participate in NUVO‘s Crawl for a Cause: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Edition, taking place on Saturday, March 26, 2011.

The first Crawl for a Cause was sponsored by Newcastle and went to benefit the Humane Society of Indianapolis; participants roved Broad Ripple Village‘s bars and nightclubs, bringing philanthropy and good cheer to Brothers, the Alley Cat Lounge, Chumley’s Beer House, and Old Pro’s Table. That Crawl for a Cause took some effort: it was in December, and though the beer went a long way to warm up the courageous participants, walking down Broad Ripple in sub zero temperatures isn’t any fun, regardless of how many brain cells you have left. Many participants wished they were doing a Snuggie bar crawl instead. This, the second iteration of Crawl for a Cause, should prove to be different. Instead of touring an Indianapolis cultural district, this Crawl for a Cause will take place at a variety of downtown Indianapolis bars. And it’s in March, which means no snow, no ice, and temperatures that won’t kill your buzz.

Starting at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, Crawl for a Cause: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Edition will take philanthropic alcoholics to five different bars in downtown Indianapolis. The fun begins at Indiana‘s oldest bar, the Slippery Noodle Inn, at 6:00. After getting their fill of jazz, blues, and beer, participants will mosey out to Howl at the Moon, where the Indianapolis nightlife party should be gathering steam. When the dancing and riotous Indianapolis music becomes too much, Crawl for a Cause will wend its way to Kilroy’s for a quiet drink or two. Then it’s on to The Pub at 10:15, where Indianapolis sports reign supreme and mini corn dogs combat the alcohol poisoning that you’ve surely begun to develop. Crawl for a Cause: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Edition ends the evening with a nightcap at Taps & Dolls. Crawl for a Cause officially ends at 12:30, but the bars aren’t closed by then: you can continue your night elsewhere, but no longer can you bum beers off of Upland or impress the other Indianapolis people at the bar with tales of your heart of gold.

All this debauchery will go to benefit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (as if you couldn’t tell by the title of the crawl). An Indianapolis non-profit organization, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is a large part of the reason the Circle City is as pretty to look at as it is. With backing from Indianapolis businesses and events like Crawl for a Cause, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful supports an average of 500 community improvement projects each year. The organization plants trees all over Indy (more than 25,000 of them since 2006), runs educational programs for Indianapolis children, organizes litter cleanup events (The Great Indy Cleanup once a year, Adopt-a-Block year round), and helps revitalize abandoned buildings, vacant lots, and other unused eyesores around the city.

Crawl for a Cause: Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Edition is presented by the Hoosier state’s favorite microbrewery, the Upland Brewing Company, based in Bloomington, Indiana. Crawlers will get one free Upland beer at each Indianapolis bar the crawl visits; that’s almost a six pack, included in the price of your Crawl for a Cause ticket! Other Indianapolis businesses sponsoring Crawl for a Cause include HotBox Pizza, IndyHub, i94, and PRN Graphics. Also included in the price of admission is a T-shirt so everyone knows you had a hand in keeping Indy beautiful. Tickets are $20 if purchased in advance, and $25 if you purchase one the night of. This Indianapolis event starts at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011 and goes until 12:30 a.m. or until you can’t stand. To summarize, for $20 Crawl for a Cause will clothe you, beer you, and make your city clean and green: what more could you ask for?
