PFLAG stands for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. This activist group offers a chance for straight relations to gay and lesbian people to stand up for the rights of their loved ones. Indiana PFLAG members gather Saturday, May 7 for the Indiana State PFLAG Conference, a chance for group members to address issues facing the GLBT community. This special Indianapolis event is a meeting ground to openly discuss a number of GLBT topics with the Indianapolis community of family and friends surrounding them. Don’t miss the chance to join in this conversation Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Life Journey Church.
PFLAG was founded in 1972 by the mother of a gay individual. When she saw her son demonstrating for gay rights on television, it was her proudest moment. When she saw him get physically attacked for standing up for his rights, it was her scariest moment. When she saw the police fail to intervene on her sons behalf, it was her angriest moment. Moved by the array of emotions experienced over one horrible incident, she wanted a way to get involved and fight on her son’s behalf.
She founded PFLAG, which grew into a national organization in less than a decade. By 1981, PFLAG had become one of the most effective grassroots organizations in the United States, with membership from thousands of families across the country. The Indianapolis chapter of PFLAG first assembles in March of 1988, with meager membership of four mothers, a few gay sons and lesbian daughter. In April, the group grew to 18. Since then the Indianapolis not for profit organization PFLAG has continued to grow to a mailing list of more than 200 people attending monthly meetings.
With a focus on advocacy for their gay and lesbian friends and family, PFLAG works with the Indiana Youth Group throughout the year, to create a safe space for young gays and lesbians to come out to. Saturday, May 7 PFLAG gathers for their largest event of the year.
The Indiana State PFLAG Conference is an opportunity for members to hear speakers on a variety of different topics including bullying in schools, GLBT Youth Straight Allies, Marriage Discrimination and Transgender issues. In addition, PFLAG members will be able to connect with fellow members from across the state, finding support in one another. Members will share updates about each chapters progress throughout the Hoosier state and Regional and National leaders will speak.
