Composed in 1723 by Italian classical composer Antonio Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is a set of four violin concertos in the Baroque classical style. Each movement is named for one of the four seasons and reflects the tone and sentiment of each season. Winter, for example, is peppered with silvery pizzicato notes to imitate the sound of icy rain. Summer evokes the feeling of thunderstorms and so on. Vivaldi set the standard for music’s imitation of nature for centuries to come.
No other classical composer has captured the essence of our changing planet as precisely and emotionally as Vivaldi. The exquisite interplay of virtuosic violine solos and lush accompaniments creates a musical sensation that is unmatchable. The piece is, perhaps, one of the most recognizable tunes in classical music having been used on television, in films and even on the Weather Channel.
Lead by concert master and violinist Zach De Pue, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will also feature solos from principal viola Michael Issac Strauss for Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. The evening combines meditations on violin and viola from two of the world’s most celebrated composers.
