The month of May is certainly a frantic one in Indianapolis. With the Indianapolis 500 and all the hubbub surrounding the 500 Festival, it’s pretty hard to ignore the Indianapolis sports world this time of year. Thousands of visitors pour into the Circle City from all over the United States, turning our normally quiet Central Indiana metropolis into a cacophony of revving engines, enthusiastic fans, and block parties. But the Indianapolis Motor Speedway isn’t the entirety of Indianapolis. For residents, there are plenty of ways to escape the Indianapolis media fervor of the greatest race on Earth: Indianapolis parks provide plenty of respite from the Indy 500 frenzy. If you’d rather relax in a lawn chair than sweat in the grandstands, Broad Ripple Park has the solution for you: the Broad Ripple Park Summer Concerts in the Park Original Music Series. This Friday, May 27, 2011, local Indy favorite Slothpop will be performing at the Summer Concerts in the Park Original Music Series.

Slothpop is the musical muse of lead songwriter Kristin “Sloth” Newborn, a North Central High School graduate who’s been playing music since the age of 3. Newborn handles vocals, guitar, and keys for the band while Lauren Eison plays violin, Dan Zender plays lead guitar, Jeffrey Vyain plays bass and cello, and Bryan Unruh mans the drum kit. The Indianapolis band plays their own breed of dreamy orchestral pop, often laced with post punk guitar riffs and looped instruments. It’s a unique brand of Indianapolis music that’s quickly gained steam around Mass Ave and Broad Ripple Village. After the performance on May 27, 2011 at Broad Ripple Park and a show at Radio Radio the following day, Slothpop will be embarking on a national summer tour, hitting venues in St. Louis, Oklahoma, Los Angeles, Seattle, and more, so their performance at the Summer Concerts in the Park Original Music Series might be the last chance you’ll have to see them this summer.
