This week, pride is in full swing throughout Indianapolis. Yes, the annual Indy Pride Festival is running from today, June 5, 2011 to Saturday, June 11, featuring Indianapolis events including community picnics, Pet Pride, the Pride Skate (a favorite of Indianapolis children and children at heart), the ever popular Indy Pride Bag Ladies’ Show, and, of course, the Indy Pride Parade. But Indianapolis music is also getting in on the biggest LGBT celebration in Central Indiana: Pride of Indy Bands will be celebrating six years of community building and music on Tuesday, June 7 with the Pride of Indy Bands Sixth Anniversary Concert.

Pride of Indy Bands formed in the spring of 2005; since then, they’ve offered up a jam packed concert calendar (more than 20 performances by their various ensembles each year) in addition to touring Indiana and playing at special community events around the Hoosier State. Part of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA), a 34 member alliance of LGBT friendly bands and musical organizations from across the United States, the Pride of Indy Bands sponsors a family of Indianapolis bands that perform everything from classical standards to jazz: Pride of Indy Bands include the Concert Band, a Marching Band, a Color Guard, various ensembles, a Pep Band, and a Jazz Band, each of which brings its own unique flavor to a performance. These groups are all conducted by Nathan Voges, a member of the Indiana Wind Symphony and the Indianapolis Brass Choir. 2011 marks six years of existence for this affirming, supportive Indianapolis musical organization, and the celebration should be a good one.

The Pride of Indy Bands Sixth Anniversary Concert won’t feature all of the ensembles that make up the organization, but you’ll be able to see performances by the Pride of Indy Concert Band and the Pride of Indy Jazz Ensemble absolutely free. The Pride of Indy Jazz Ensemble has been a part of Pride of Indy Bands since 2007, and in that short time they’ve been seen at several Indianapolis music venues and concerts; Clowes Memorial Hall, the Indianapolis Parks Summer Concert Series, the Indianapolis Artsgarden, and the Indianapolis International Airport have all hosted the Pride of Indy Jazz Ensemble, and their annual fundraiser, Time Warp 1941, is always a much anticipated event. The Pride of Indy Concert Band brings pops, classical, and pep tunes to the table in three annual events each year: the Holiday Celebration in December, the Indy Parks Summer Concert Series, and this annual anniversary concert.

Indianapolis people who attend the Pride of Indy Bands Sixth Anniversary Concert will get to take in classic Disney tunes, jazz standards, and favorites from musicals such as Les Miserables. Participants are invited to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks to create a cozy, picnic like atmosphere where everyone is free to mingle and have a good time. The anniversary concert will take place on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Firehouse Lawn, located on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and College Avenue in the Indianapolis cultural district of Mass Ave; in case of rain, the concert will be moved to the cozy environs of the Indy Fringe Building.
