Iron and Wine Croons to Hoosiers at the Vouge

The Vogue in Broad Ripple Village is an iconic part of Indianapolis nightlife. It’s light up marquee is a centerpiece of College Avenue, each week advertising the next cool Indianapolis music event. This Friday, June 10, 2011, Iron and Wine performs on stage at the Vogue in Broad Ripple Village with The Head and The Heart. The fun starts in this Indianapolis cultural district at 9:00 pm. Iron and Wine is the stage name of singer songwriter Samuel Beam. This South Carolina born crooner actually has an MFA from the Florida State University Film School. Before hitting it big as a musician, Iron and Wine worked steadily as a professor of film and cinematography at the University of Miami and Miami International University of Art and Design. In his free time, he wrote songs and made demos to hand out to his friends.
He released his first album, The Creek Drank the Cradle, in 2002. With a soothing mellow sound, Iron and Wine has been compared to Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Elliot Smith, Neil Young and John Fahey. His recording of The Postal Service’s then unreleased song “Such Great Heights” shot him to stardom when the band included his version on the b-side of their original version. The song was featured in the soundtrack for Garden State and in an advertisement of M&M’s.

Since 2002 Iron and Wine has released four studio albums, two live albums, eight EPS and one compilation album. His music has been featured on television shows including “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The L Word,” “House, M.D.” and others. He has also been featured on the soundtrack for the film Twilight.
Iron and Wine released his first album on the record label Sub Pop. Now he brings with him to Indianapolis music another new and on the Sub Pop label. The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, left behind ghosts and moving forward. Their folksy sound brims with soulfulness and hope. This budding band has the critics turned on the their ears eagerly awaiting more.
