The Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Summer Nights Film Series continues Friday, July 1 with Zoolander, the funniest movie about modeling ever made. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell star in this outlandish comedy that takes on the world of professional male models and mind control. Enjoy the fresh Summer night air as you watch a film at the IMA’s outdoor amphitheater, adjacent to the Gardens of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Tickets to this Indianapolis event are $5.00 for members of the museum and $10 for Indianapolis people.
Released in 2001, Zoolander tracks the story of Derek Zoolander, a down on his luck male model that gets wrapped up in a ridiculous conspiracy. Directed by Ben Stiller and written by Drake Sather (NewsRadio, Saturday Night Live, The Larry Sanders Show) Zoolander originated from a series of short films shot for the VH1 Fashion Awards television specials that aired in 1996 and 1997.
After a “freak gasoline fight accident” killed several of his friend, Derek Zoolander (the hottest model on the market) announces his retirement. He gives up his life of fame and fashion to work a coal mine with his father (Jon Voight) and brothers. However, his family soon rejects him. Meanwhile, fashion bigwig Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) is busy plotting to assassinate the Prime Minster of Malaysia to retain cheap child labor in the country. He offer Derek a job in his upcoming fashion show, with plans to brainwash him into a killing machine. Soon Derek must join with his modeling world enemy, Hansel (Owen Wilson), to defeat the evil forces at play and save the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The film premiered only two weeks after the September 11, 2001 attacks, which ultimately hurt the movie’s box office. However, the movie is a cult favorite and show often on Comedy Central and other cable channels. The movie is peppered with cameo roles from stars like Jerry Stiller, David Duchovny, Andy Dick, Milla Jovovich, Patton Oswalt, Vince Vaughn, Judah Freidlander, Donald Trump, Christian Slater, Cuba Gooding Jr., Paris Hilton and countless others. This hilarious film is one of the best from Ben Stiller, during the height of career. See the model who can only turn left save the day and the world. Don’t miss Zoolander at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
