Though David Gray released his first studio album in 1993, it wasn’t until six years later that he began to get the international attention he deserved. When he released his album White Ladder in 2000 on the ATO Record Label, it seemed as if this singer songwriter was an overnight success. However, David Gray struggled through years of playing local clubs in the United Kingdom in folk rock circles. With little commercial success on his first three albums, Gray’s window of opportunity for success was quickly closing. He transitioned from pure folk rock to blend folk, alternative, rock and electronics. He released White Ladder on his own label in 1998 before ATO Records picked it up in 2000.
With the distribution power of a major record label behind him, Gray’s music was finally being heard by the masses. The album included his best known songs including “This Year’s Love,” “Bablyon,” “Please Forgive Me” and “Sail Away.” The songs landed Gray on the UK Singles Chart and gave him star power in the United States. Since his breakthrough album, Gray has toured the world playing Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.
His latest album Draw the Line was released in September of 2009 in the UK and the US. The album features collaborations with Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. The album, which features the ever evolving musician as he turns his perspective outward, was well received by critics and fans alike.
“I’d been very introspective for whatever reason,” says Gray, “partly success, partly things that happened in my life around the time of ‘White Ladder.’ I guess as a singer songwriter you’re gonna have a little bit of that anyway in your makeup. My previous records were inward most of the time. But suddenly with the song ‘Draw the Line,’ I’d kicked the front door down and I was outside. The world was my oyster: that’s what I felt as a writer.”
