“All I can do is be me, whoever that is.” –Bob Dylan. Girls Rock! is an Indianapolis not for profit that takes this idea from the father of folk to a whole new level. With a mission to instill positive self-esteem in girls through music, Girls Rock! Indianapolis offers young girls a chance to embrace a sense of uniqueness by teaching them how to rock. However, this annual week long day camp is about more than just rocking out. Through music education, girls get the opportunity to take part in a non-competitive environment that fosters leadership, encourages social change and cultivates a sense of community among female peers and mentors. Sounds good, huh?
You can join in the effort by supporting Girls Rock! at NUVO Newsweekly‘s Crawl for a Cause, coming up Friday, July 8, 2011 from 6:oo pm to 12:30 am. Tickets to this Indianapolis event are just $20 in advance and only $25 during the night of the event. Plus, enjoy FREE Upland beer at four different locations in the Indianapolis cultural district Fountain Square. And, the admission fee includes a free t-shirt, keeps you from paying a cover at any of the participating bars and offers free admission to the Girls Rock! benefit concert at the White Rabbit Cabaret.
Start your evening at Revolucion, where you can check in from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Then hop to the Brass Ring and the Red Lion (featuring fun at both iMOCA and Big Car Gallery in the Murphy building). Finish the night at White Rabbit Cabaret with a concert featuring Indianapolis music favorites The Vallures and Amo Joy. The concert starts at 10:00 pm, so get their early enough to stake out a good spot. All proceeds from this event go to the Girls Rock! Indianapolis camp, during the first week of August 2011.
The day camp is designed for girls ages eight to sixteen. During the week, campers get a crash course in playing an instrument, songwriting, zine making, self defense and more. Campers do not need to come with prior musical experience, and all instruments are provided. During the week, girls are divided into bands and taught to create music from scratch.
More than that, campers are welcomed into a positive atmosphere and surrounded by mentors who encourage integrity, honesty and respect. By working together in their bands, they are taught to share, cooperate and collaborate in a way that empowers their collective voice. The camp also stresses the importance of diversity, encouraging each girl to be unique and true to herself.
