One of the most treasured traditions in folk music is that of the duet, when two singers get together to croon to and with each other. Many times these arrangements are between a man and a woman (with entirely different vocal ranges), so there are often some really soul stirring harmonies that crop up; duets are also an opportunity for something of a dialogue between two singers, a dialogue that extends beyond the lyrics themselves. Sure, usually songs written for duets contain some back and forth banter (you say po-tay-toe / I say po-tah-toe), but it’s the musical conversation going on that’s really interesting. On Friday, July 15, Indianapolis people will get the chance to see several popular Central Indiana musicians meld their talents in a series of duets accompanied by cello, guitar, and other acoustic instrumentation. It’s Duets in the Round at Locals Only Art and Music Pub, featuring four duos of Hoosier folk singers in a super-sized harmonic happening.

Duets in the Round will consist of four different pairs of Indianapolis musicians: Cara Jean Wahlers and Grover Parido (who will also accompany the evening on cello), Greg Ziesemer and Kriss Luckett-Ziesemer, Danny Flanigan and John Martin, and Bill Price and Michael Clark. Cara Jean Wahlers is a resident of Broad Ripple Village, and, along with Grover Parido, is a fairly common sight at Indianapolis music venues. Wahlers and Parido released their first album, Goodnight Charlotte, in July of 2010. Parido, a classically trained cellist, also performs with The Maple Trio (described on Parido’s website as “waltz meets raga”) and The (Re)Collective Company. Greg Ziesemer has been involved in the Central Indiana music scene for over twenty years (he is currently a member of the Spud Puppies), and his music draws influences from Jerry Garcia, Son Volt, Steve Earle, Woody Guthrie, and many others. Ziesemer’s latest album, Baptism of Fire, combines “newgrass” with psychedelic rock, and was released on the Indie 500 label in 2002. Ziesemer will be duet-ing with his partner, Kriss Luckett-Ziesemer; together, they have released two albums, Virginia and Bare Bones.

Danny Flanigan is a folk musician from Louisville: he has been releasing albums since 1989, and his latest, Hope is a Word, was released in 2011. Flanigan has been playing guitar since age 9 and attended the Berklee College of Music. Flanigan’s partner for Duets in the Round will be Jon Martin, a member of Sindacato, a prolific Indianapolis band with heavy bluegrass and Americana influences. The final duo at Duets in the Round at Locals Only will be Bill Price and Michael Clark. Bill Price is the mind behind The Brains Behind Pa, a collaboration between Price, Gordon Bonham, and Garry Bole which combines traditional favorites with original songs. Michael Clark is a Gold Record award-winning producer who operates a home recording studio here in Indy; as a musician, he has won awards with Iron Horse (Clark’s former band), the Sheila Stevens Band, and his own material, and he even wrote material for the Bob and Tom Show.

If you want to see some good ‘ol fashioned two person crooning, you need to head on out to the north side of the Circle City for Duets in the Round at Locals Only Arts and Music Pub. The Indianapolis bar will be filled with the sounds of acoustic instruments, sweet harmonies, and a little good natured back and forth. Join Cara Jean Wahlers, Grover Parido, Greg Ziesemer, Kriss Luckett-Ziesemer, Danny Flanigan, Jon Martin, Bill Price, and Michael Clark at Locals Only for this peaceful Indianapolis event. Tickets to Duets in the Round are $10 for all residents, and, despite its easy-going nature, the concert is not for Indianapolis children: since Locals Only is a bar, audience members must be over 21. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011. If there’s nothing better in your mind than two voices joining together in song, come to Locals Only this Friday for Duets in the Round.
