Nothing illuminates a child’s mind like discovering the power of their imagination through books. Second Story is an Indianapolis not for profit organization that promotes literacy for Indianapolis kids and in Indianapolis schools and the Indianapolis community. Vouched Books teams with Big Car Gallery’s Service Center to present Dogzplot Literature Party, a free fundraising effort for Second Story on Monday, July 18, 2011. This Indianapolis event begins with food and beer at 6:00 pm and readings at 6:30 pm. Head to the 38th Street International district of Indianapolis to enjoy this Indianapolis education event.
Second Story serves the community and promotes literacy through a number of different efforts. Their programs include in-class writing instruction at Indianapolis Public Schools, after school tutoring, creative writing workshops and other events. This community based, volunteer driven organization aims to help young people in Indianapolis form positive attitudes about writing and reading. With a more refined skills set in these areas, students increase their chance at success in academics and in life.
The organization works with kids ages six to eighteen of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. Second Story volunteers urge students to discover their voices and explore the world around them through writing. By embracing a sense of curiosity, students find joy in writing and in life. Established in 2007, Second Story provides supplemental writing experiences in small group settings, giving students focused and personalized attention.
So far, Second Story has helped kids through summer programs on East 10th Street and the Near Eastside. In addition, Second Story has worked in schools with fourth and seventh graders and has created after school programs at the Wheeler Arts Center in Fountain Square and other centers. In 2010, Second Story implemented it’s first program specifically designed for high school students at Manual High School. They also collaborate with Garfield Park Arts Center on art and writing projects.
The results thus far are amazing. More than 90 percent of students involved with the program report a positive attitude about writing. More than 70 percent of students showed measurable improvements in their writing skills. Most importantly, 100 percent of students receive hands on exposure to new media and see tangible products of their efforts by creating books, videos or websites to share with the community.
