Swift traveled to Nashville at 11, toting a bag full of demo tapes. Though she handed out copies to every label in town, she was met only with rejection. That is until she landed a gig singing the national anthem at the United States Open Tennis Tournament. At 15, RCA Records offered the young singer-songwriter an artist development deal, which she rejected. Holding out for something bigger and better, Swift kept performing in Nashville. One such performance at The Bluebird Cafe captured the attention of Scott Borchetta, who signed her on his newly established label: Big Machine Records.
Her first hit single “Tim McGraw,” expounded on a lost Summer romance heavily linked with Tim McGraw’s music. It reached number six on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. From there, she found major success with her self-titled debut album, which produced several popular singles. It peaked at number one on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and number five on the Billboard 200.
Her second album, Fearless, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, cementing her status as a teen queen. The album brought her even more accolades. For instance, she tied Miley Cyrus for the most number of singles charted on Billboard’s Hot 100 in one week by a female ever. Hot off the success of her newest album, Swift was engaged to perform at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where her fate in the media would become inextricably linked to that of Kanye West.
She was nominated for and won the award for “Best Female Video.” As she was onstage accepting the award, West stepped up to the microphone saying, “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!” Later in the ceremony, when Beyonce won the award for Best Video of the Year, she invited Swift back up stage to finish her speech.
Since then, Swift’s status as America’s sweetheart has been wholeheartedly cemented. Her latest album, Speak Now, was released in 2010 and certified triple platinum. Hear her sing favorites from all three records at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis downtown this Friday, July 29.
