Sweat slinging across stage. Raw, bloody fingers picking guitar strings. Drummers crashing down on their set. The Battle of Birdy’s rages on, again, this Summer as Indianapolis bands compete for the title of champion. Each year, Birdy’s Bar and Grill transforms into a gauntlet where bands go head to head to see who will come out on top. The Battle of Birdy’s started Friday, July 22 and runs through November, creating a unique Indianapolis music event. The cover at the door is $7.00, and comes with voting power to push your favorite group to the front of the pack.
Birdy’s Bar and Grill, located north of Indianapolis downtown, is a go-to Indianapolis music venue for burgeoning bands. In 2005, the owners of this Indianapolis bar had a stroke of genius. We all remember battle of the bands from the days of high school. But what if this music joint took it to the next level, offering bragging rights to any band that can stick out a four month challenge of playing for their lives. Thus the Battle of Birdy’s was born. Since its inception, it has grown to be Indianapolis’ premiere battle of the bands.
The operators of the competition are constantly honing the process. Now in its third format iteration, Birdy’s Battle of the Bands is ready to crown the new heroes that emerge from this years competition. All events are held at Birdy’s on Friday nights, except for the finals which headline Saturday night.
The rules are simple. But winning is not easy. Each band gets a 30 minute set. Winners are determined by a combination of fan voting (70%) and judges voting (30%). Every attendee who pays their $7.00 cover charge gets a ballot, on which they rank the bands by giving them points on a scale of five to one. The band with the most points at the end of the night wins. Though up to seven bands can play each Friday, only two move will be pushed through to the next level.
For the winners, it means a chance at getting more gigs, finding a solid fan base and possibly becoming local celebrities. If you are in band that aspires to greatness, sign up for your shot at stardom. All band members must be over 18, at least half the band must be over 21 and at least half the band needs to reside in Indiana. In addition, there is a $40 registration fee.
