“Grease is the word. Grease is the word, is the word that you heard. It’s got groove, its got meaning. Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion. Grease is the way we are feeling!” Ever been to your favorite musical or movie musical, ready to belt out all the words to your beloved songs, only to be shushed by the woman sitting next to you? Sing at the top of your lungs to the film classic Grease at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Friday, August 5 at 9 pm. Tickets to this Indianapolis event are $5.00 for museum members and $10 for Indianapolis people.
Released in 1978, Grease is a landmark in movie history. Starring John Travolta at the height of his career as a teen heartthrob, the adorable Olivia Newton-John, the unmatchable Stockard Channing and a host of other favorites, Grease is a time capsule of the 1950s.
Relive the moments Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson share at Rydell High. After an incredible Summer romance, the pair split ways never to see each other again. As they recount their “Summer Nights'” on the first day of school, they soon meet up as students at the same school. The only problem, Danny Zuko the tough guy, can’t be caught dead as putty in Sandy’s hands.
As the Pink Ladies show Sandy (“Look at Me I’m Sandra Dee”) the ropes and the T-Birds squeeze Danny for details (“Greased Lighting”), Sandy continues to pine for Danny (“Hopelessly Devoted to You”). Watch as the kids of Rydell High visit the drive-in (“Sandy”), try for careers beyond high school (“Beauty School Drop Out”) and enter a dance competition (“Born to Hand Jive”).
Sing-a-long to all of these songs and more including “Freddy, My Love,” “There are Worse Things I Could Do,” “We Go Together,” and of course “Grease.” Relive the glory days of a favorite film at the IMA. Head to the Indianapolis Museum of Art this Friday night when poodle skirts and leather jackets make a come back in a big way.
