When Harry Met Izzy

Harry and Izzy's Indianapolis, INHarry Roth and Izzy’s Rosen were bosom buddies, the quintessential “Odd Couple.” Since the age of ten, the two boys were inseparable. Whether in class together at Old Manual High School or playing in the Circle City, the boy’s were fast friends. At 13 Izzy’s father passed away, pushing him toward a new path selling produce and meats outside the old City Market. Harry left Indianapolis to attend Monroe College of Optometry in Chicago-land.

Harry and Izzy's, Indianapolis, INIn 1946, Harry’s brothers, Sam and Ike, made him an offer that would change his life forever. Together the trio of brothers purchased St. Elmo’s Steakhouse. Harry traded eyeglasses for bar glasses, jumping feet first into a whole new industry. A decade later, Sam and Ike left the business and Harry made the same life-changing offer to his old friend Izzy, now working as a bookie. The friends became partners, 50/50, in St. Elmo’s.

Harry’s signature brightly colored, patterned bow ties were perhaps the first sign of St. Elmo’s success. His wife insisted he wear them in lieu of longer ties; she was not fond of cleaning their world famous spicy cocktail sauce out of his silk ties. Harry’s flamboyant style became a signature of the St. Elmo’s dining room. His business partner Izzy was a man of few words, whose large personality and even larger cigars signified him as the consummate man’s man.

The duo framed St. Elmo’s as Indianapolis’ fanciest restaurant, catering to many notable Indianapolis people. St. Elmo’s current owners celebrate the legacy of Harry and Izzy’s with an offshoot restaurant aptly named for the two men.
