The historic Lockerbie neighborhood bares the name of its founder, George Murray Lockerbie, a Scotsman who moved to Indianapolis in 1831 from Lexington, Kentucky. The Indianapolis Glove Company was founded in the neighborhood nearly three-quarters of a century later. The “brick with steel frame” construction was a marker of the decline of the residential character of the area. With expansions made to the building in 1923 and 1933, it overtook the 400 block of Park Avenue. By 1969, the company was ranked third in the national glove-making industry, producing more than 600 kinds of gloves for nearly every kind of industrial work. But by 1982, economic decline forced the company to vacate the building.
In that same year, a plan for the rehabilitation of the factory and grounds was announced. Sixty-two condos were created in the factory, renamed the Lockerbie Glove. Two years later, architectural firm Archonics and contractor George Sweet had completed the transformation.
