Now playing at the Oaklandon Civic Theatre in Indianapolis, Indiana is a clever play written by Robert Gerlach and James McDonald. Directed by Clance LaTurner, Ladies First is a comedy about the hilarious interplay that ensues when a nervous Jackie Kennedy, having just completed a restoration of the White House in 1962, decides to invite Eleanor, Bess, Mamie, Pat and Lady Bird into the Yellow Oval Room to give their opinions. Suffice it to say she gets what she asks for…and then some!
Apparently, these former first ladies aren’t exactly thrilled with the way “Jacky O” runs the White House, let alone her lack of political involvement. But things really heat up when Mrs. Roosevelt commands her to head a crusade for women’s rights.
Somewhere along the way, each first lady gains insight into herself and her relationship with her husband. “Ladies First” offers a entertaining perspective on just how funny it can be to hold the highest non-paying job in the USA.
