A Royal Affair is playing at Landmark’s Keystone Art Cinema & Indie Lounge in Indianapolis through February 22. This Danish film, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, is set in the late 18th century, circa 1771. It’s an historical romance based on the true story of a dangerous and illicit love triangle between Queen Caroline Mathilda, her insane king Christian VII, and the idealistic royal physician. The film depicts the real-life consequences for the Danish nation, as the values of the Enlightenment collide with the political establishment and traditional, religious values . Danish actress Trine Dyrholm plays the king’s stepmother, Queen Juliane Marie, who plays a major role in the Struensee’s downfall. Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen stars as Johann Friedrich Struensee. Alicia Vikander stars as Caroline Mathilde, while Mikkel Boe Folsgaard stars as the ever-crazy Christian VII. Watch as these unlikely characters follow their passions and change the course of an entire nation along the way.
A Royal Affair won Silver Bears at the Berlin International Film Festival and up for an Oscar nomination in 2013. The film took 4 years to shoot. It was produced by Louise Vesth, Meta Louise Foldager and Sisse Graum Jørgensen. The film offers compelling cinematography, with scenes shot at various locations throughout the Czech Republic, including Doksany, Ploskovice Chateau (King’s cout summer palace) and Prague.
