The Athenaeum will host KinderKarneval, 10th Annual Children’s Mardi Gras Party on February 10, 2013. This is a great opportunity for kids to enjoy a fun afternoon in-costume. Various crafts and activities will be offered, including a magic show, games, songs, dancing and mask-making. Costumes are not included in the cost of admission. There is no particular type of costume that is required. Adult costumes are optional.
The festival draws upon the traditions of Karneval of Indianapolis’ German sister city Cologne/Köln, where all residents venture out of their homes masqueraded. Cologne carnival is one of the largest street festivals in Europe. In northern Germany, the tradition dates back to the agricultural age, when young farm servants would venture from house to house in the villages in search of sausages, eggs and bacon for use in festivities that would happen later that same night. These servants, mostly young men, would wear masks and make noises.
A magic show will be provided by Abracadabra, a professional entertainment company based in Indianapolis which provides specialized entertainment services, such as face painting, balloon artists, magic shows, etc.
Guests are reminded that the Rathskeller Restaurant is located in the basement of the Athenaeum. All proceeds from the KinderKarneval Children’s Mardi Gras Party go toward the maintenance and care of the Historic Athenaeum.
