It’s hard to believe that baseball season is back already. The Indianapolis Indians’ home opener versus the Columbus Clippers will mark the 126th consecutive season of professional baseball in Indianapolis. The game kicks off Thursday evening at 7:05 pm at Victory Field in White River State Park.
The tribe had a great year in 2012, taking 1st place in the International league’s West Division. And though they lost in the semi-finals, it doesn’t take away from the fact that their 89 wins and 55 losses represent an historic season and a Victory Field era record. What’s more, their home record at Victory Field was their second best ever, with 48 wins to just 24 losses.
It will be interesting to see what pitcher Gerrit Cole can do this season. Recall that Cole was originally selected in the first round (first overall) of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He barely reached a deal with the Pirates, signing an $8 million deal with just 15 minutes to spare before the signing deadline. In fact, he signed too late to actually pitch for the 2011 minor league season. The Pirates invited him to their spring training in 2012 as a non-roster invitee, but optioned him to the minor leagues. He eventually wound up in Indianapolis on August 29, 2012.
