They will perform songs from their new album, The Terror, which was released April 16 in the U.S. It almost isn’t fair to call them one-hit wonders, although technically, that might be an accurate description. Their style can be flowery at times, and darker at others.
The tour will take them to over 30 locations around the world, with stops in Canada, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy and Norway in addition to 17 stops in the U.S., including Indianapolis.
For anyone unfamiliar with The Flaming Lips, they are an Oklahoma-based rock band whose discography dates back to 1986 with the release of Hear It Is. They followed this with a succession of 15 albums, with such creative titles as Telepathic Surgery, Clouds Taste Metallic, At War with the Mystics, The Dark Side of the Moon, and most recently, The Terror.
They emerged in the national consciousness in 2002, when their song, “Do You Realize?” quickly climbed the Billboard charts. The Oklahoma Senate even unanimously voted it the official rock song of Oklahoma in 2009.
It has been said that musical lyricists have effectively taken over the job once held in ancient times by philosophers. Lead vocalist Wayne Coyne certainly did nothing to dispel this notion as he stated in a recent press release, “We want, or wanted, to believe that without love we would disappear, that love, somehow, would save us that, yeah, if we have love, give love and know love, we are truly alive and if there is no love, there would be no life. The Terror is, we know now, that even without love, life goes on… we just go on… there is no mercy killing.”
Their style has been classified as Neo-psychedelia, experimental rock, space rock, dream pop, alternative rock, noise pop and even post-punk.
