The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will descend on the legendary 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the 20th annual Brickyard 400 kicks off Sunday, July 28 at 1 pm.
The big question is whether Jimmie Johnson can get his 5th win in Indy, or whether rivals like Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, even Kasey Kahne can pull an upset. There is a strong case to be made for Jeff Gordon. After all, he has already won 4 Brickyard championships, in 1994, 1998, 2001 and 2004; this in addition to 11 top-5 and 15 top-10 finishes. And with a driver rating of 101.8 over the past eight races his resume speaks for itself.
While the 160-lap race officially starts at 1 pm, there will be plenty to do long before. The gates open to the public at 6:00 am.
Here are a few highlights of events scheduled to take place before the race:
The “Social Media Garage” begins at 8 am. Guests can take watch live interviews with the drivers, take laps in racing simulators and test their trivia knowledge to win prizes.
A Kids Zone will take place from 9 am – 2 pm to keep the little ones occupied with music, dancing, games, and prizes.
From 9:00 am – 9:30 am the country rock trio, The Cadillac Three, will perform at the Brickfest Music Festival Stage.
From 9:30 am – 10:45 am, several NASCAR drivers will each participate in brief, 15-minute Q&A sessions on the Chevy Stage, including Ryan Joseph Newman, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Cassadee Pope, who is a singer-songwriter, musician, lead vocalist of the pop rock band Hey Monday, will perform at the Brickfest Music Festival Stage from 11:15 am – 11:45 am.
As always, the name of this year’s Brickyard 400 winner will be inscribed on the PPG Trophy, along with the names of past winners. The trophy can be seen at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.
The Brickyard 400 is part of the Super Weekend at the Brickyard, which includes races for the Sprint Cup Series, Grand Am and Nationwide Series.
