Game Day Football Pizza Pockets

The big game is coming up this Sunday and you’re looking for a fun snack to make for the family or to take to a Super Bowl party. The great thing about these little football shaped pizza pockets is that they’re simple to make, only require a few ingredients, and the kids will love them. Of course, feel free to substitute any of your favorite pizza ingredients.game day football pizza pockets

Ingredients:

1 pack of pie or pizza crust

Pizza Sauce

Pepperoni

Mozzarella Cheese (I used shredded, but slices would work better)

1 egg (beaten with tbsp of cold water)

Directions:

Roll out the pie crust of pizza dough. If you’d like the pockets to be a little more flaky go with the pie crust.

Take a knife and cut out the shape of a football (It doesn’t have to be completely perfect).

This will be your template for cutting out the rest. Set the football template on top of the remaining dough and continue cutting out as many football shapes as you can.

Re-roll the scraps and continue until you’ve run out of crust/dough.

Now that you’ve got your football cutouts, place a couple pepperoni slices, some mozzarella cheese, and a little pizza sauce on top. Brush a little of the beaten egg around the edges and cover with a second cutout. Then press down the edges to seal the toppings in.pizza pocket toppings

After making a couple, I realized it’s easier if you start by putting the pizza sauce in the middle and brush the egg around the edges before adding the other ingredients on top.

It would also be better to use slices of mozzarella cheese as opposed to shredded. I had problems with over stuffing so be sure to watch how many toppings you add or you could even make the football cutouts bigger. Oh well, you live and learn!

Next use a fork to crimp the edges around the pizza pocket and make slits in the top to resemble football laces. Brush the tops of each football with the egg and place them on a greased baking sheet.

Bake in a pre-heated over at 425°F for around 10-12 minutes or until the pizza pockets turn golden brown. Serve with pizza sauce for dipping.

Though my football pizza pockets didn’t turn out the prettiest the first time around, they tasted fantastic and are a perfect finger food for Sunday. Now that I’ve gotten my first practice in, I think I’ll score big with these treats on game day!
