#Indianapolis – I made a new friend a few months ago, she’s a mom from my daughter’s preschool. We bonded on the playground one day while discussing local wineries (we both love Mallow Run), frozen alcoholic beverages and Puerto Rico. Her husband is Puerto Rican and I’ve been to Puerto Rico. Conversations about travel turned to conversations about food (naturally), and we discovered we both love Mexican food and we both had recommendations for one another.
Don Gusto P.J. is a sort of “hole in the wall” and “off the beaten path” restaurant that specializes in Tortas, which are Mexican sandwiches. I love American sandwiches but for my whole life I’ve been stuck in the rut of eating the same thing when I eat food at a Mexican restaurant, fajitas. Don Gusto has a menu with some of the menu items you’ll find at other restaurants but really, you must order a Torta.
The small red building on Meridian has parking on site and indoor seating. When you enter, grab a menu and then place your order at the counter. The staff is friendly and happy to share information and answer questions about their menu items. They also offer catering, carry out and are very popular for their custom cakes and bakery items.
I personally recommend the Azada torta, a steak sandwich with refried beans, avocado, tomato and onions. My husband loved the Del Rey (the King), a torta filled with ham, cheese, breaded chicken, sausage, chorizo, cheese and eggs, topped with mayo, tomato, onion, lettuce, avocado and refried beans. The tacos are so delicious and remind me of authentic street tacos that I enjoyed in Mexico.
Don Gusto is located on the south side of Indy at 3960 South Meridian, Indianapolis. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Don Gusto P.J. serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I recommend grabbing a bunch of tamales and taking them home to freeze for later. They make the best snack or lunch and dinner on the fly.
