Indianapolis Zoo Reviews and Comments

Indy Zoo is Awesome!

“We love the Indy Zoo. It is an awesome place to take the kids for a few hours or spend the day.”

Pleasant But Average Zoo

“We have visited many zoos throughout the midwest and throughout the country. The Indianapolis zoo is probably one of the least memorable. There is nothing bad about it and it is a pleasant enough place to spend 5 hours or so. The animals appear well cared for and the zoo is clean. I just don’t find it to be particularly imaginative in its presentation or use of space. If your kids like zoos they will enjoy this place. However, if you have limited time in Indy I would recommend the Children’s Museum(not to be missed) or the very worthwhile Conner Prairie living history museum(although about a 25 minute drive from downtown Indy) rather than this zoo. If you are looking for a zoo to visit in this general region of the country I think the Louisville zoo is better or the Fort Wayne (Indiana) zoo is quite excellent or the small Binder zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan is more imaginative. The Cincinnati zoo is tops too.”

Small, Pricey

“The Zoo is walkable from downtown hotels, and is on a beautiful setting (as is the walk through canals to get there).

We paid $14 pp (AAA discount) for admission, which includes the adjacent gardens. Being from StLouis where our zoo is free (and the 3rd largest in the USA), this was a big disappointment. The Indy Zoo is very small. The dolphin show (included in the admission) was packed with to many people, and was only about 10 min of dolphins – very disappopinting (maybe thats why it is free).

The other features of the zoo were clean and appeared new, but again everything is smaller scale than other zoos I have been too. Overall, I would not say this is worth $14 pp as there are many other better and cheaper zoos in the Midwest.”

Definitely Go to the Dolphin Show

“The butterfly and botanical garden were good, but what made this zoo memorable was the dolphin show (included in the price of admission). You could really tell the trainers enjoyed their jobs.
The animals looked good and looked like they were well taken care of. They did have several places to eat there, but we didn’t eat so I’m not sure of the price.
The only reason I am not giving this a 5 star rating is because is was so HOT the day we went and there weren’t many places to cool off. (We went July 13) I’m sure earlier in the season it would be much more enjoyable.”
