Indianapolis Ice Hockey

Hockey is a sport that is alive and growing in popularity in Indy. It is no secret that sports are a major facet of the Indianapolis cultureIndianapolis, Indiana is known for some of the most notable spectacles in sports. Hockey is in great company on the Indianapolis sports scene and there are many opportunities to enjoy this great winter sport.

Indianapolis is home to the Indiana Ice who play in the Eastern Division of the United States Hockey League. The tier one hockey team plays from November through late April and offers up suspense and action as they battle on the ice against rival teams. Indiana Ice tickets are a great deal and an affordable alternative to the the usual Indianapolis sporting events. Hockey fans can get very hot and bothered at a game but in between periods, fans can chill out in the sports bar in the lower level of Conseco Fieldhouse called the Ice House. Only a handful of games are hosted at the Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis; most of the games take place in the Pepsi Coliseum at the Indiana State Fair Grounds.

The Pepsi Coliseum is home to Indiana Ice hockey games, but also to various events during the Indiana State Fair, as well as various concerts. In the winter months, it is transformed into an ice skating rink and provides entertainment and family fun for adults and Indianapolis kids of all ages. Before the Coliseum became the unofficial home of the Indiana Ice, it played host to The Indianapolis Checkers. The Checkers were part of the Central Hockey League that existed until 1984. The Checkers joined the league during the 1979/80 season.


Indianapolis may not be world-renowned for hockey, but the sport is defintely alive, well and growing. Offering a high entertainment value, hockey is thrilling and entertaining todie hard fans as well as casual observers, making it as diverse and unpredictable as the Indiana weather.
