Rosanna Hardin Hall: Artist, Educator, Scholar

Rosanna Hardin Hall paints the world’s magnificent gardens from her studio in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dedicated to this specific niche, she travels far and wide to paint en plein air and capture every nuance of light, color and texture. Classically trained and oriented, Rosanna makes site-specific, representational landscapes in oil on linen, watercolor, pastel, pencil and charcoal. She is a credit to Indianapolis art.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Art from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In addition to her formal higher education in the arts, she studied with these formidable art teachers from the Indianapolis art community and beyond: Ellen Burchanal and Howie Weiss of the Maryland Art Institute, Diana Gisolfi, Dimitri Hazzikostas and Dicks Ruben of Temple University in Rome and Daniel Graves of the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.

Her subjects represent gardens all over the world, from Venice to Pompeii to her own Victorian garden in Indianapolis. Her greatest influences are the famous Italian Renaissance artists and the unparalleled plein air paintings of Jean Baptiste Camille Corot.

Like those landscape artists before her, Rosanna’s work is dramatic and full of a mastery of color and light. Sometimes the piece will be almost photographic in its representation, and at other times there is a sense of more modern influences, such as cubism or impressionism. But regardless of her chosen methods, her subject always comes first and is depicted with flair and respect.

Rosanna has many erudite articles on subjects related to art, which have been published in well known print media such as the Washington Star, the Indianapolis Star, the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Honolulu Adviser.

Her work, along with other local Indianapolis artists, has been displayed at many different Indianapolis art galleries, exhibitions, and locations, such as former mayor Bart Peterson’s office, the Garfield Park Arts Center, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Hoosier Salon, and the Herron School of Art’s Alumni Show.

She continues to use her art education to offer art instruction in her studios, and in the Honolulu Academy of Art, the University of Hawaii and the Indianapolis Art Center.
